# Junior jobs in Switzerland: how much experience is required?

In Panta’s 4 November cohort, 54 ordinary-role listings had assessable requirements. Nine specified consistent positive prior-experience years, and two contained conflicting numerical demands. Six explicitly accepted alternatives such as study projects, training or internships. These are findings in a bounded indexed cohort, not a national estimate.

## What the reviewed junior adverts ask for

54 assessable regular roles from 36 recorded employers; one additional regular role could not be assessed. Explicit-title cohort at 4 November 2026, reviewed with AI assistance. Categories concern advert wording, not actual hiring decisions.

| Evidence category | Listings |
| --- | ---: |
| Positive required years: consistent wording | 9 |
| Positive required years: conflicting clauses | 2 |
| Occupational experience required, no years | 16 |
| Practical experience or capability required | 2 |
| Experience preferred | 11 |
| Explicit alternative to employment experience | 6 |
| No prior-experience statement | 8 |

## What the junior label tells you

A junior title can describe a first step in a particular team or profession while still asking for experience. The practical question is which kind: paid employment, occupational familiarity, a student project, an internship, or simply demonstrated technical capability. Counting every occurrence of “experience” would miss those distinctions.

We reviewed the candidate-profile wording and relevant description passages of every record in Panta's declared junior-title frame on **4 November 2026**. The frame contained **69 canonical records across 43 indexed employer or recruiter groups**. After the exclusions below, 55 ordinary-role records remained; one stored description lacked a candidate-profile section, leaving **54 assessable records across 36 groups**.

“Ordinary-role” means outside the structured training/cohort and other excluded pathways. It does not mean a permanent contract. This report studies advertised wording, not whether employers enforced it when selecting candidates.

## What the 54 assessable adverts asked for

| Reviewed experience wording | Records |
| --- | ---: |
| Consistent positive numerical years requested | 9 |
| Positive numerical years, with conflicting clauses | 2 |
| Unquantified professional or occupational experience requested | 16 |
| Practical experience or capability requested, without an employment-tenure requirement | 2 |
| Explicit alternative to prior professional employment accepted | 6 |
| Experience described only as preferred or advantageous | 11 |
| No prior-experience statement detected | 8 |
| Total assessable ordinary-role records | 54 |

The **nine consistent numerical cases** comprised two with a lower endpoint of one year, four with two, and three with three. We did not convert “several years” into a numerical threshold or assume that banking experience necessarily started after an apprenticeship. The eleven records containing positive numerical demands came from eleven recorded employer groups.

Examples span occupations. The stored profile for a junior purchasing role asked for one to three years in procurement or purchasing. An electrical design role asked for two to three professional years alongside a vocational qualification. A junior banking-adviser role asked for at least three years of banking experience. These are different career contexts, rather than evidence that one universal definition of junior is being violated. The two conflicting cases need more care. A junior accountant description referred to three-to-four years in its introduction and at least two-to-three in its qualifications. A junior solutions-architect description used three-to-five years in one place and five-to-ten in its required qualifications. We retain the conflicts rather than choosing one number or calculating an average experience requirement. The frozen review trail identifies both clauses; original adverts can change after collection.

The sixteen unquantified cases included first occupational experience and vague requests for some or several years. We keep these separate from practical familiarity with a tool or technique, which can come from education. None of these categories proves that previous paid employment is indispensable unless the wording actually establishes that.

## Alternatives change the interpretation

Six ordinary-role adverts explicitly allowed a route other than prior professional employment. One mechanical-engineering advert accepted either one-to-two professional years **or** industry-related practical work during studies. An early-career hardware role stated a zero-to-three-year range and accepted experience from internships, a thesis, student teams or personal projects. Neither became a hard positive-years requirement in our coding. The eleven preferred-only cases also matter. A construction-industry practice clause marked as advantageous is different from mandatory prior employment, even where the rest of the profile lists substantial skills. Independent AI-assisted review caught and corrected one such distinction before publication.

The eight adverts without a detected prior-experience statement still contained other requirements. Absence of an experience clause does not establish that every beginner qualifies. Conversely, “first experience” need not automatically exclude someone whose relevant evidence comes from training or an internship. Ask how the employer interprets an unclear clause.

## Why training and contract status stay separate

We separated **nine structured graduate, cohort or training-pathway records** from the ordinary-role analysis. They included three CERN graduate-contract adverts whose two-year experience number was a **maximum** eligibility limit. A paid driver-training advert included a future service commitment; those future years were not prior-experience requirements.

We also excluded one combined qualified-driver/junior pathway, one mixed senior/junior title, one spontaneous-application pool, one title explicitly locating the role in Guernsey despite its stored Swiss classification, and one probable syndicated duplicate. The first-party counterpart of that duplicate remains in the cohort. These are research exclusions only; source observations were not merged or edited.

Among the 55 ordinary-role records, **12 explicitly described permanent employment, three explicitly described a fixed term, and 40 left contract duration unstated** in the reviewed evidence. Full-time wording alone never established permanence. The corresponding positive-years counts were three, zero and eight. These small contract groups cannot establish that temporary work is easier to enter.

## How this relates to other research

The experience paradox is already being discussed. In October 2026, developerjobs.ch reviewed 16 junior developer adverts and reported four asking for two or more years. Some adverts overlap with Panta's cohort. Our contribution extends the review across occupations, separates requirements from preferences and alternatives, and publishes the exclusion and evidence trail. The two samples and thresholds differ; their percentages should not be compared as a market trend. [developerjobs.ch study](https://developerjobs.ch/en/blog/junior-developer-job-switzerland).

There are also legitimate institutional meanings of junior. The Swiss-sponsored Junior Professional Officer programme, described by the FDFA, requires a master's degree and three relevant professional years. It introduces qualified people to work in an international organisation. That is a reminder to examine the entry point a title describes before calling a requirement contradictory. The programme is contextual evidence, not part of our advert counts. [FDFA programme](https://www.eda.admin.ch/en/junior-professional-officer-programme-and-young-professionals-programme).

Our [AI and junior-jobs evidence review](/insights/ai-junior-jobs-switzerland/) discusses research on changing opportunities. This snapshot does not establish a historical decline or explain why an employer chose a particular experience requirement.

## Scope, sensitivity and use

Coop-Gruppe and the recruiter Excellent Go4 each contributed four assessable records. Removing Coop leaves ten positive-years records among 50 assessable; removing Excellent Go4 leaves eleven among 50. Retaining the excluded probable duplicate would yield eleven among 55. These checks show the result's sensitivity within this cohort; they do not make it representative of Switzerland.

Selection used explicit multilingual junior, entry-level, graduate and early-career title terms, successful source-refresh backing and stored physical-Swiss-workplace classification. Associate and generic occupational titles were not inferred junior. Relevant unlabelled jobs remain outside the frame. Employer groups, geography and canonical deduplication can be imperfect.

Coding was AI-assisted, with independent agent review of the central clauses and negative cases; it was not independent human double coding. The public JSON pack retains counts, source links, decisions and frozen-content evidence hashes while excluding full descriptions and contact details. The CSV provides aggregate counts. Read the [research methodology](/insights/methodology/) alongside them.

For an application, translate a junior title into four questions: what experience is required, what is preferred, which alternatives are accepted, and what remains unclear? Describe projects and training accurately, keep their dates and responsibilities visible, and ask about contradictory wording. The strongest practical finding is the variety of entry routes hidden behind a single career-stage label.
