Build a focused employer shortlist from official directories, sector evidence and your own constraints without treating every company as a vacancy.

Define the work and region you want, find company names through several credible sources, then check each one. Keep employer fit, signs of hiring and unanswered questions separate. A company can suit you without having a vacancy today.
Start with constraints, not company names
Write a short employer brief:
WORK
Functions or problems I can handle:
Adjacent job titles:
Sectors I understand or want to test:
PRACTICAL CONSTRAINTS
Locations and maximum commute:
Workload:
Required working language:
Remote or hybrid needs:
EMPLOYER QUESTIONS
Organisation size or stage, if important:
Customer or product context:
Evidence I need before contacting:
Use this brief when you compare companies. Otherwise a familiar name can crowd out a smaller employer that suits you better.
Use several discovery paths
Official and legal directories
Use Zefix or the UID Register to confirm names, registered locations and identifiers. The federal SME portal explains that Zefix provides access to the daily-updated commercial register, while the public UID Register helps identify enterprises uniquely. Read the commercial-register explanation and the UID Register overview.
Registers can confirm identity. They do not review an employer or prove that its local office contains the team you want.
Industry associations and event programmes
Member lists, exhibitor directories and conference programmes can reveal organisations active in a field. Check who assembled the list and what inclusion means. An exhibition stand proves attendance, not quality or hiring.
Suppliers, customers and partners
If you know one relevant company, inspect its public partner pages, case studies and procurement notices. Record the relationship exactly. A logo may be old or refer to a global parent rather than a Swiss team.
Research institutions, clusters and economic-development pages
Universities, innovation parks and cantonal promotion bodies often list local sectors and tenants. Use them to find names, then verify each company on its own site and, when useful, in an official register.
People and professional work
Talks, open-source projects, publications and professional groups can reveal the problems a team works on. Use public work to find organisations; do not collect private details about individuals.
Separate three kinds of evidence
| Column | Question | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Employer fact | What can I verify? | Official Basel office listed on company site |
| Hiring evidence | Is there a current or dated signal? | Current quality-engineer vacancy checked 8 September |
| Interpretation | Why might it fit me? | Regulated manufacturing may use my audit experience |
Add a fourth column for unknowns. Write “Which language does the Basel quality team use?” instead of assuming English from a global website.
Build a shortlist, not a directory
EMPLOYER:
OFFICIAL DOMAIN:
LEGAL ENTITY / UID, IF USEFUL:
SWISS LOCATION EVIDENCE:
RELEVANT WORK OR TEAM:
SOURCE AND DATE:
CURRENT VACANCY EVIDENCE:
HISTORICAL HIRING EVIDENCE:
WHY IT MAY FIT:
IMPORTANT UNKNOWNS:
NEXT CHECK:
KEEP / WATCH / CONTACT / REMOVE:
A short, checked list is more useful than hundreds of names with no reason attached.
Worked example: food-quality roles near Lausanne
The employers are fictional. Ana wants quality-assurance work within 45 minutes of Lausanne. She works in French and English and has experience with supplier audits in food manufacturing.
She starts with a regional food-industry event programme, a trade-association member list and the tenant list of an innovation park. She finds 18 names and checks their official sites.
| Employer | Verified fact | Hiring evidence | Interpretation | Unknown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LacVert Foods SA | Production site near Morges | Current laboratory technician advert | Site may also need supplier-quality work | No relevant vacancy now |
| Ferma Analytics SA | Lausanne office; food-testing services | Two quality roles seen last year | Audit experience may transfer | Historical roles may not recur |
| Nordgrain Group | Swiss sales office only | None | Product fit looked relevant at first | No evidence of local production team |
Ana watches LacVert, researches Ferma further and removes Nordgrain from this search. She does not describe any of them as “hiring quality managers.”
Decide the next action
- Apply when a current suitable role exists.
- Watch when the employer fit is supported but timing is not.
- Research when one important fact could change the decision.
- Contact when you have a specific function and the employer accepts direct approaches.
- Remove when a hard constraint fails.
You do not need to contact every company you find. “Not a fit” is a useful result.
Maintain the list
Add a last checked date and a next action. Review strong candidates more often than weak ones. Merge names, subsidiaries or language variants only after confirming that they refer to the same employer.
When a company changes name or appears in several sources, use the official domain and, where useful, the UID to resolve identity. Do not merge different Swiss entities because their names look similar.
Common mistakes
- Copying a directory without defining why each employer belongs.
- Treating a registered office as proof of a relevant local team.
- Turning a partner logo or old advert into current hiring evidence.
- Ranking employers from marketing language.
- Collecting personal employee data instead of organisational facts.
- Keeping every possible company until the list becomes unusable.
- Sending unsolicited applications before identifying a function.
Check an employer shortlist
- My work, region and practical constraints are written down
- Names came from more than one discovery path
- Each company has an official domain and verified Swiss relevance
- Employer facts, hiring evidence and interpretation are separate
- Old adverts are labelled historical
- Important language, location and team unknowns remain visible
- Every retained employer has a reason and next action
- The list contains organisations, not unnecessary personal data
For each retained name, use the deeper company-research worksheet. If no suitable role exists, decide whether a careful unsolicited application is appropriate.
Put the guide to work
Use what you learned to research employers and turn broad ideas into a focused shortlist.
